Thomas Beattie was born a girl, and yet, felt inside more like a man. He went through a transgender transition, meaning hormones and surgeries that turned them into the man he wanted to be. He also made a choice to keep his women's reproductive organs. Now, after having a child with his wife of 10 years, Thomas Beattie and his wife may need to seek out legal aid for discrimination.
As a man Thomas Beattie married Nancy, and turned into a happily married couple that ran their own business. Due to a hysterectomy earlier in her life, and that was unable to bear children. So in order for this couple Thomas Beattie and Nancy Beatty to have a child they would have had to hire a surrogate mother, or have Thomas Beattie's estrus cycle start again.
This of course caused a multitude of problems, as Thomas Beattie is known as the pregnant Man, and there were many discriminations against the couple while they were pregnant with their first child and now they have a right to seek legal aid.
Legal aid is available in a variety of forms for families like Thomas Beattie who have stepped outside of the norm to have a marriage and a family. Thomas Beattie is legally a male, Nancy Beatty is legally a female, and they are legally married in the state of Oregon. And yet, doctors, nurses, and others discriminated against them continually during their pregnancy.
Whether they seek out legal aid, or go to raising their child, a little girl, just as others would, is totally up to them. But the fact that they were discriminated against and add to go through nine different doctors in order to bear their child, can make quite a few legal issues where Thomas Beattie may want legal aid.
The fact of the matter is that a person was pregnant, this person has all of the equipment except breasts in order to bear the child. Whether you think this is right or not, does not mean that you should be able to discriminate against them and that they should lack health care. And this is the reason for legal aid.
It probably was not easy for doctors, nurses, and receptionists to find an answer to their dilemmas. Some of the dilemma was religious, others, through fear. There are plenty of legal aid individuals that are probably knocking on the Thomas Beattie's door in order to find out if they'd like to sue this person or that person. Whether the Beattie's sue or not, does not negate the right that they have had to deal with discrimination and have a right to legal aid.
A surgical procedure and a hormonal procedure were done on someone who felt they were in the wrong body. After marriage comes children, and this couple is no different. Rather than hire a surrogate mother to carry their child, they add the equipment to carry their own and did so. Thomas Beattie is now known as the Pregnant Man with all of the discrimination and ridicule. Legal aid that many be needed to make sure their child is raised in a supportive and loving environment. Without legal aid, they could very well find themselves in an overwhelming struggle to be considered "normal".
